Avianca was founded back in 1919, and has always been the flag carrier of Colombia. Avianca was derived from the Spanish acronym “AeroVIAs del ContiNente AmeriCAno S.A.” which means Airways of the American Continent. Avianca has three main hubs at El Dorado, El Salvador, and Jorge Chávez International Airport. No question about that, Avianca is a huge airline with a lot of subsidiaries.
The Colombian airline is currently led by the Chairman of Avianca Holdings S.A.: Germán Efromovich. The growing fleet size of Avianca now has a total of 163 aircraft serving 122 domestic and international routes.
In 2009, during the 90th anniversary of Avianca, they announced a merging with TACA. TACA Airlines was the second-oldest continuously operating airline brand in Central America and the Caribbean after Cubana de Aviación. Since 2013, all the AviancaTaca airlines were changed to the Avianca brand name.
Flying with Avianca
The national airline of Colombia has two cabin classes of service: Economy and Business Class.
Economy Class – Passengers enjoy the best service, special attention, and a variety of fares according to their needs. To keep them entertained, a touch-screen entertainment system is available on each seatback that allows travellers to enjoy the best movies, TV series, music, and games. Avianca offers Economy Class customers with a selection of foods and drinks carefully prepared for customers’ diets and preferences.
Business Class – Passengers flying this class receive preferential treatment. The leather seats with lumbar support have additional recline and more legroom space. Pillows that perfectly fit into the seat are ready. For entertainment, customers have an option to use the Sky Office entertainment System (with over 400 songs, latest movies, and games of any age). Travellers looking for relaxation can use the noise-cancelling technology or charge their electronic devices using the power outlet located near their seats.
Official Website and Mobile app
The official website of Avianca was nicely done: clean, organized, and formal. Though, the number one concern about the web page is the text sizes are too small. On positive note, the website lets travellers search for flights and hotel reservations online. As customers with a booking, they can also check their flight status and itineraries online. Avianca provides information on its services, policies, and news updates. To learn more about them, they have their social media account link present on the official site.
For smartphone users, Avianca also has a travel app ready to be download from the App Store and Google Play Store. The mobile application is free and had been getting positive feedback from users.
Avianca Reviews of Customers
For some customers, Avianca offers great service, from booking right up to the destination. Unfortunately, bad reviews are quick to catch up saying that Avianca may not be the ideal airline to book with. Despite all of that, there are still a number of loyal customers who would prefer to fly with Avianca.
