HomeAway was recently founded by Brian Sharples and Carl Shepherd in February 2004 as CEH Holdings, though the name was changed in June 2006 as “HomeAway”. From then, it acquired several travel sites: CyberRentals, GreatRentals, A1Vacations, TripHomes, FeWo-direkt, VRBO, Abritel, VacationRentals, OwnersDirect, Homelidays, BedandBreakfast, Alugue Temporada, Escapia, RealHolidays, Torprural, Travelmob, Stayz Australia, Bookabach and Glad to Have You. All of these companies operate as one: HomeAway.
Now, HomeAway has over 1600 employees serving with more than 1 million vacation rental listings in 190 countries. The American online vacation agency had acquired a total of 40 websites in 22 languages. Last year’s revenue reached $446.8 million that made a 28.9% increase from 2011.
The background of HomeAway is a picture of a happy family having a reunion over a barbeque in an indoor pool of a house. For me, the picture resembles an at-home vacation experience in panorama view. First thing travelers notice is the option to type in where they want to go, selecting the duration and number of guests. In this review I tried to search for Massachusetts from April 4 to 8 as 1+ guest.
First it will provide you the Top 5 featured places in Massachusetts but if customers want to select by prices, they have to select one of the options of how they want the results customized either by price, by number of persons or rooms. The results page also offers several other destination suggestions within Massachusetts.
NOT with HomeAway
HomeAway gathered an overall score of 0.9 out of 10 rating according on Trustpilot.com, it wasn’t hard to find reviews of the customers for HomeAway, but it was heartbreaking that they are all complaints. According to 145 HomeAway reviews, they are saying the site is shameful, permits cheats, fraud, disgusting, unpleasant and a horrible travel site. It is easy for them to say this such accusation because they experienced those first hand.
One reviewer said they had a “double booked” and the agent of HomeAway only informed them a day before that they had to move to a cockroach-infested room and five times away from the festival they were attending. She even said that HomeAway was lazy about refunding their money and they even ended up with no refund and staff saying “not our problem”.
I find this an extremely rude way to leave a customer hanging. I wonder if HomeAway is doing something about this and other thousand reviews. To see more of the recent complaints, click here.

The company slogan “Let’s stay together” is not applied to most of HomeAway reviews, because as of now, consumers keep complaining while some remain unanswered and agitated. Aside from focusing for growth, I think HomeAway should focus more on their customer’s concern and not get away from home first.
