The first “no-frills” or low-cost airline in South Africa and also the second placer from the bottom list of the “World’s Top 100 Airlines” by Skytrax. In this review, we’ll look more about Kulula.
Kulula traces its roots back to 2001 and started operations in the same year. The airline provides major domestic flights to the citizens of South Africa. Comair is the parent company of Kulula, which also operates flights as a franchisee of British Airways. Erik Rudolp Venter has been their CEO since 2011. Erik also serves as their Finance Director since 2013.
The South African budget airline is headquartered at Bonaero Park, Kempton Park, Ekurhuleni, Gauteng with two hubs: OR Tambo and Lanseria International Airport. Now, Kulula has a total fleet size of 10 Boeing aircraft catering flights to 7 destinations internationally.
InFlight with Kulula
Kulula offers two kinds of service: Economy and Cabin class. All seats in both classes can be reclined for a flexible position and comfort. Incoming passengers can select their seat on the website, however extra charges are required. Meals and snacks are sold on board in which their menu includes a meat roll sub, veggie roll sub, Pringles, Oreos, chocolates, muffins, and more tasty snacks. To keep passengers entertained, flight attendants hand out Khuluma magazines which feature different topics like lifestyle, gadgets, shopping trends, photography, and business.

The official website is pretty standard for an airline interface. To be honest, initially, I mistook Kulula for an online travel agency. Kulula’s page is pretty much the basic airline service, everything from booking flights to arranging hotel and car reservations. Packages for holiday destinations with discounted prices are included under the category of packages. The website allows passengers to manage their flights by checking in and adding extra services during flights.
To access the mobile version of their website, use “kulula.mobi.” However, a travel app is not yet available from the App Store and Google Play Store.
Kulula Reviews of Customers
Kulula is not yet given a star rating by SkyTrax. Despite the “almost lowest” ranking, Kulula received positive reviews from their previous passengers. Some of the reviews mentioned that the seats were a little cramped, however, they didn’t complain, rather they came to Kulula’s defense saying that the company is a budget airline, therefore the seats were justified.
Customers complimented the cleanliness of each airliner and the friendliness of the attendants. One passenger in particular was happy when the ground attendants allowed him to board his flight despite arriving to the airport 20 minutes before his flight. Kulula doesn’t seem so bad.

Judging through several Kulula reviews, despite being the 99th place airline in the world, Kulula provides quality service and managed to gain loyal customers. It will take many years before they achieve major improvements but with better management, Kulula is still in the race.
