The Cocoon tower was built within two years from 2006 to 2008. The architecture design of the tower was determined by a design competition to put elite architects against each other, there was only one rule, the building shall never take a rectangular shape. The architecture firm Tange Associates won the battle with their cocoon-like design. The design was to pay tribute to the Japanese tradition of beautifully wrapping objects.
