Mr. Niki Lauda: a former Grand Prix driver and three-time F1 world champion. Well, that doesn’t have anything to do with airlines. Though, this F1 racer took a different curve in his career when he established Lauda Air in 1979. From cars to planes, not a bad idea. Lauda Air was merged with Austrian Airlines in 2012 while the birth of another airline called “NIKI” by Mr. Niki Lauda was established in 2003.
NIKI merged with Air Berlin in late 2011 to share operations, booking systems, and aircraft. The airline has been an affiliate member of Etihad Airways Partners and Oneworld since 2012. In the spring of 2015, NIKI started to replace its fleet of Embraer 190s with Airbus A319-100s from its parent, Air Berlin. The used Embraers were transferred to Helvetic Airways.
Now, NIKI has 19 all Airbus fleet serving scheduled and charter services to destinations to several countries in Europe. They are currently being led by their CEO, Mr. Thomas Suritsch. NIKI uses the frequent flyer program, topbonus by Air Berlin.
Inflight with NIKI
The Austrian low-cost airline might be a budget carrier, but it offers full service such as free refreshments, newspapers, and baggage. It offers a sandwich or a cold snack, soft drinks, tea and coffee on all short-haul flights as well as on charter routes. Customers can reserve NIKI special gourmet meals from their menu online up to 48 hours before they fly.
Official Website and Mobile app
We personally love the official site of NIKI, since it was kept simple and organized. It was easy for customers to use the website for booking and checking their flight status. The site can be changed to other languages apart from English and the option is shown at the top right. Overall, NIKI’s web page is full of information regarding the services, rules, and news.
As for the mobile application, NIKI uses the travel app of AirBerlin which is free to download in the App Store and Google Play Store. To see the full description and functionalities of the mobile version of the service, click here.
NIKI Reviews of Passengers
Looking at Skytrax, NIKI got an overall rating of 8/10. According to 33 NIKI reviews, the airline is certainly one of the best airlines in the world. In 2015, the airline had even ranked up to 98th from being 103rd from the world’s top 100 airlines. Moving forward, passengers are majorly talking how amazed they are with the cabin’s cleanliness. Plus, the fact that their flight attendants were friendly and professional. Though, the tendency of delayed flights is an issue, some customers waited for hours before their departure and NIKI seems to have a problem with their speed of checking in and distributing luggage.

It seems like NIKI is not that popular but had been discreetly providing their utmost service to its customers. Not all low-cost airlines were able to join the ranks of the top 100 airlines, but obviously NIKI did. Just imagine, they were just operating for 13 years compared to others that took 20-30 years to reach where they are. NIKI had been doing a great job since 2003.
