To be effective worldwide is the main goal of Travel agencies. Most agencies find it hard to operate even in a local domain, imagine the level of difficulty once they go worldwide. There are agencies who manage to operate around the world, Orbitz is one of them
Orbitz was founded in 1999 as a subsidiary for leading US airlines in order to expand their services. Their website was established in 2001 and has been in business ever since. Orbitz is in a competitive battle with Booking.com, Tripadvisor.com, Flighthub.com and other agencies.
Barney Harford is the current CEO of the worldwide agency and manages to contributed a lot to the company’s progress. Harford held the position of CEO and director since 2009, with his leadership, Orbitz was able to establish their own mobile application and the company generated over $12 billion in annual gross bookings for 2014.
Anyway, enough with information about the company’s background. Let’s see what people have to say, people, meaning individuals who have dealt with Orbitz before.
Despite being a worldwide company, Orbitz seems to fail in providing satisfactory services to its customers.
The company only got a 1 out of 5 star rating from Consumeraffairs.com. It seems that Orbitz has trouble in confirming flights for their customers. One patron was outraged when she wasn’t permitted to board the flight she already paid for using Orbitz.
Their service for seat selection also got a beating, it seems that Orbitz has the authority to pick out the perfect seat without notifying the travelers.
Keeping up with the rapid changes in flight service seems to be a little too much for Orbitz.
On Trustpilot.com, things are not getting better for Orbitz. The company got a 1.5 out 10 star rating. Another topic of complaints is hidden fees, customers are forced to pay extra amounts despite the fixed price rates promised by Orbitz. Most of the reviews encourage future travelers to deal with airlines and hotel companies directly.
Orbitz manages to maximize the function of their website. Booking travel tickets and other reservations is easy. The website design is a little cluttered and not properly organized. They also present “hot hotel deals” which are hotel reservations with their price rates. A list of popular destinations is seen in the homepage footer.
So all in all, the website is easy to navigate, but the appearance is not appealing, maybe Orbitz focuses more on the services they provide.
Allianz Travel Insurance
Orbitz partnered with Allianz Global Assistance to provide travel benefits to travelers. Anyone enrolled in the insurance program can receive 100% reimbursement for sudden cancellation and interruption of flights. Their reimbursement function is also applicable for lost or damaged baggage and coverage of medical services during traveling.
The Orbits App
To simplify and provide a more convenient way for travelers to book their flights, Orbitz established their own mobile application for IOs and Android. Booking flights, hotels and car rentals is easy with the app. Map navigation is also provided, but the best thing about the app is the $25 discount for hotels, only available for app users. Orbitz application is the recipient of the Best Travel App by 2014 APPY Award.
Their customer phone line is available for English and Español. They also have live chat support but at specific times per day. Monday to Friday (7am – 10pm CDT), Saturday and Sunday (10am – 9pm CDT).
Customers can also submit feedback via the website. But, the website itself includes a FAQs page for general information about Orbitz instruction for travel services and policies.
Expedia is the parent organization of Orbitz. There are over 1,400 employees working for Orbitz and their headquarters is located in the Citigroup Center in Chicago, Illinois, USA.

Looks like Orbitz manages to stay alive despite the negative reviews and criticism from previous customers. Consistency should be applied in their operation to overwhelm bad comments, but maintaining a consistent set of services is hard, really hard. Well, it’s up to Orbitz.
